Nothing like a bed of newly planted and mulched roses!<\/p><\/div>\nIf you ever bought roses via mail order you’ve encountered bareroot roses.\u00a0 Even many local garden centers sell them this way and those roses you buy in plastic sleeves are also considered bareroot roses.<\/p>\nOpening a package of bareroot roses and suddenly being faced with a plants and no dirt can be a bit intimidating.\u00a0 Yet, planting them is really not that difficult and we’ve done a video giving you a simple system from what to do when the plants arrive – to actual planting – to when you should start feeding.<\/p>\nWhen dealing with bareroot roses keep this one simple rule in mind.<\/p>\nDo not let they dry out.\u00a0 You can keep them in a bucket of water for up to 48 hours, heel the roots in most soil; even keep them wrapped in plastic in a dark cold cellar.<\/strong><\/p>\nWe also deal with two questions that always come up when planting bareroot roses.\u00a0 1) How big should the hole be?\u00a0 2) Should I bury the bud union?\u00a0 We hope our one answer fits all solution will clear this up for you.<\/p>\nHere are a few simple rules when handling and planting bareroot roses<\/p>\n\n
Keep the roots moist until you can plant the rose<\/li>\n
Always bury the bud union – the video explains why<\/li>\n
Assuming you’ve been doing proper soil maintenance you do NOT need to dig a big hole – the video has more details<\/li>\n
When you back filling the hole stop half way and water in<\/li>\n
When you are done mulch, mulch, mulch!<\/li>\n
Don’t fertilize until you see about 3-5 inches of new growth.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
