Dr. Huey. The understock most widely used in the United States<\/p><\/div>\nAs you start to buy roses from mail order nurseries, and even some local ones, you are going to encounter both these terms.\u00a0 You’ll want to know a little about the differences so you can make an informed choice.<\/p>\nUp until recently most roses sold around the world were grafted.\u00a0 This means the variety you want was budded onto an understock – usually Dr. Huey in the United States.\u00a0 Many a rose grower experienced buying a beautiful white rose only to have it years later “change’ into a semi-double red one.\u00a0 What happened was Dr. Huey took over.\u00a0 We call this suckering.\u00a0 (It refers to the Dr. Huey taking over not to the person who bought the rose!)<\/p>\nOwn-root roses are roses struck from cuttings.\u00a0 This means the roots are the same variety as the rose above the ground so it can never “change” by suckering.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\nThis begs the question, if this is the case then why weren’t all roses own-root roses?\u00a0 Certainly would have saved a lot of work tearing out those Dr. Huey roses!<\/p>\nThere is a simple answer.\u00a0 Many florist and exhibition roses aren’t vigorous enough to grow on their own roots.\u00a0 They stay puny and eventually die.\u00a0 Hardly a Garden Rose!<\/p>\nAlong with disease resistance we feel being able to grow vigorously on its own roots is another important characteristic of a Garden Rose.\u00a0 Plus own-root roses make fuller, bushier plants and constantly put out new canes from the base.\u00a0 They make Garden Roses.<\/p>\nFor this reason we recommend you purchase Garden Roses on their own-roots.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\nHow do you know if it’s an own-root of grafted rose?\u00a0 Ask whomever you are buying it from.\u00a0 If they don’t know then run away and find someone who knows what they are talking about!<\/p>\nAfter you view the video we suggest you go to Part 5 of\u00a0Roses 101.<\/p>\nHere is a short video showing what we’re talking about.<\/p>\n<\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player lazyload\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SoX3ANlsMoQ?version=3&rel=1&showsearch=0&showinfo=1&iv_load_policy=1&fs=1&hl=en-US&autohide=2&wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As you start to buy roses from mail order nurseries, and even some local ones, you are going to encounter both these terms.\u00a0 You’ll want to know a little about the differences so you can make an informed choice.
